Are you looking to convince that spouse of the many benefits of your flying habit? Perhaps you have a special someone to impress. Or maybe you have a family in need of a vacation. If so, Mackinac Island awaits.
There are many attractions to enjoy on Mackinac Island. The first is obvious right after you arrive. From the airport you will take a taxi into town. But since the island bans automobiles, your taxi will be a horse drawn carriage. If your carriage pulls up to the Grand Hotel, you are sure to impress your traveling companion. But any B&B on the island is a safe bet. Once you are settled in, it is time to explore the island. A carriage tour or a bike ride (rentals available) provides a bit of insight into why this 8.2 mile around island was so important to both the British and American armies. A trip to the hilltop fort lets you see where those armies fought. After all that touring, it is time to partake in the island’s famous fudge! The cool lake air is a perfect environment for cooling the rich treat. If you have another day, you can choose to ride horses, visit the butterfly garden or take the ferry to the mainland (no bridge connects the island to the mainland; the bridge shown in Image 2 connects Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with the rest of the state).
There are some tricks to flying into Mackinac Island. Be sure to check the Airport Facility Directory for the suggested flight path. They try to keep aircraft from over-flying the city and shoreline. The airport doesn’t have fuel. So plan a fuel stop before or after. Finally, there is a landing and overnight fee. Check here for the latest rates.
