Grissom is a current Air Reserve Base and a former Air Force Base and Naval Air Base. The airport is now open to the public. Grissom is a great destination if you want to learn a bit about the history of the base and see some historic aircraft up close.
The airport even has an FBO, Montgomery Aviation located on the Northeast side of the field. You can fuel up at the self serve pump and park in front of the FBO.
From the FBO, the Grissom Air Museum is a short walk down the road. The museum offers displays on the Wright Flyer, an F4 cockpit, WWII bombers, uniforms and a number of other subjects. But most of the museum is located outside where the static aircraft displays are located. Here you can see over 25 aircraft including everything from a B-17 to an F-14.
This is a great fair weather destination. Since most of the museum is outside, I would suggest you visit during a good weather day and dress appropriately. To make the visit complete, pack a lunch. There are a number of picnic tables around the base perfect for catching a glimpse of a KC-135 returning from an aerial refueling mission.
