In 1937 the residents of Wausau, WI cleared six ski runs by hand and installed the nation's longest ski lift. So began what is now called Granite Peak (www.skigranitepeak.com; 715-845-2846). There are now 72 runs complete with ample snow making facilities. Before you land, take a spin around the mountain, which lies just West of the airport.
The past few years have been good to Granite Peak. There is now a full ski village at the base of the mountain offering rentals, shopping, eateries, lounges and even a training center. All this has made Granite Peak one of the best ski locations in the Midwest.
You can rent an car from Enterprise (www.enterprise.com) for the short drive to the mountain. The friendly staff at Wausau Flying Service (www.flywausau.com) can help you arrange a rental car or taxi. They also have a courtesy car for short trips. Check out the Granite Peak website for more information on local lodging.
If you are just stopping by for a bite to eat, I suggest The Mint (image 6 and 7). The staff at Wausau Flying Service can provide directions.
