Lansing (IGQ)

Lansing is a great little airport on the Southeast side of Chicago. It holds a special place in my heart since it was the first airport I ever flew out of in a small plane. After your visit, you may find a reason to love Lansing.

Be sure to check out the Historic Ford Hangar. Jimmy Doolittle, Billy Mitchell, and Amelia Earhart all flew into Lansing at some point. There isn't a museum, but you can imagine those great pilots pushing their planes of the hangar (images 1 and 2).

If you are up for an adventure, try a helicopter intro lesson at Sun Aero (www.sunaerohelicopters.com; 708-895-8958). They offer half-hour intros for only $129.

Shannon's Landing (yes, it is open again) offers a great view of the field from the second story restaurant. Unlike many other airports, Shannon's Landing opens for lunch instead of breakfast. It can be a bit hard to find the restaurant. You are looking for a nondescript building (image 2) next to the Ford Hangar. Access the restaurant through the door closest to the Ford Hangar.
