Ephraim (3D2)
Door County is often called the Midwest’s Cape Cod. It is a destination for family vacations, romantic getaways and even outdoor enthusiasts. The Ephraim-Fish Creek Airport is located ideally to take advantage of all Door County has to offer.
The airport website ( www.friendsofephraimgibraltarairport.com ; 920-854-9711) is a good place to start your planning. The airport has overnight fees ($10/day last time I checked), fuel and rental cars.
If you want to avoid renting a car, I would suggest staying at Julie’s Park Motel ( www.juliesmotel.com ; 920-868-2999; image 10) in Fish Creek. Julie’s will pick you up right from the airport. The hotel is situated adjacent to Peninsula State Park that offers hiking, biking (rentals available), boating (rentals available) and a beach. Fish Creek itself is a small walk-able town with a number of small specialty shops and restaurants.
If you are looking to tour a larger area, I would suggest staying at the Pine Grove Resort ( www.pinegrovedoorcounty.com; 800-292-9494; image 9) in Ephraim. The owner of the hotel is a pilot. Pine Grove will pick you up from the airport and may be able to help you secure a car (phone ahead). The hotel has a wonderful view of Eagle Harbor. From Ephraim, you can explore Fish Creek and Sister Bay, two short drives up and down the coast.
Before you leave, I would suggest flying up to the end of the Peninsula and around Washington Island. Be sure to bring your camera!
