Chicago Lakeshore
It is one of the best ways to impress a passenger. I have used the flight numerous times to sell prospective students on starting their flight training. The Chicago Lakeshore flight is something you need to experience if you are a Chicago-area pilot. The flight can be daunting for the first-timer not accustomed to the airspace, but it’s really a piece of cake.
First you need to study the airspace: O’Hare’s Class B, Midway Class C and Gary/Executive/Waukegan Class D. You will notice that staying below 3,000 feet right along the lakeshore is clear of the Class B and C airspace. Most pilots choose 2,500 feet. So choose something else: 2,700, 2,300, etc. Turn on your landing light to make it easier for others to see you. It is also prudent to pick up flight following.
Special care should be given to any Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR). Check the area NOTAMs. President Obama’s house is on the South side of Chicago. Unfortunately, it is close to the lake. So the standard 3 mile radius TFR around his house extends far out over the lake.
Be sure to bring a camera! Even poor weather days, I have seen some spectacular views.
